Tempeh Starter

Tempeh is a delicious, high-protein main dish made from soybeans, and has been a staple in Indonesia for centuries. Like cheese, yogurt, and sourdough, tempeh is made by natural culturing; the soybeans are cultured with a mold that produces a delicate filament with a light, mushroom-like aroma and flavor. The protein in tempeh is partially broken down during fermentation. This makes tempeh highly digestible and excellent for children, the elderly, or anyone with digestive problems.

Tempeh is easily made at home with basic kitchen supplies, using grains, hulled soybeans or other beans (or a combination of beans and grains), and our tempeh starter. Lightly cooked, hulled beans or grains are mixed with the starter and are allowed to stand in a warm place until fully cultured. Instructions for preparation are included with our starter.
