Frequently Asked Questions About Textured Soy Protein & Concentrates
What is it?
Textured soy protein is a food product made from soybeans. It is produced from soy flour after the soybean oil has been extracted, then cooked under pressure, extruded, and dried.
What's in it?
The main ingredient is soy flour. Our unflavored textured soy protein products have absolutely no added coloring, flavoring, or preservatives. The Response flakes have vitamins added (see the package labels for a listing). The flavored products are 100% vegetarian--no flavorings from animal products. The main food elements are protein, carbohydrates and very little fat. Unflavored textured soy protein is essentially fat-free, since it is defatted during the manufacturing process. The fat content in flavored textured soy proteins varies.
Textured soy protein is a complete protein, containing the essential amino acids. It also is high in isoflavones, which have been shown to reduce cholesterol and cancer rates.
How long will it keep?
Unflavored textured soy proteins will store indefinitely, if they are stored in a dry, air-tight container.
Flavored textured soy proteins will store for up to one year in a dry, air-tight container. Once rehydrated, textured soy protein must be stored in refrigerator or freezer.
How much does it make?
A 1 lb. bag will make about 12 servings, equal to 3 lbs. of ground beef.
1 dry cup of textured soy protein granules is equivalent to 3/4 pound after rehydrating.
How do I prepare it?
1 dry cup of textured soy protein is reconstituted with 1 cup of boiling liquid. (Let it stand for 10 minutes.)
Unflavored textured soy protein takes on the flavors of whatever is used to season it.
Harvest Direct Broths are great for flavoring textured soy proteins.
